Albert Einstein met Marie Curie
Einstein met Marie Curie at the first Solvay Conference in Brussels in 1911, and in the summer of 1913 they went on a hiking holiday in the Engadin with her daughters and his son Hans Albert. Anecdotes from the hike come from later recollections and should be presented as reported.
Albert Einstein corresponded with Marie Curie
On 23 November 1911, during the press scandal over her relationship with Paul Langevin, Einstein wrote to Curie urging her to ignore the attacks. The letter is held in the Collected Papers.
Albert Einstein admired Isaac Newton
Einstein's 1927 bicentenary essay on Newton's mechanics praised Newton as the founder of strict causal description in physics and placed relativity as a continuation of his program. In the Autobiographical Notes he addressed Newton directly, saying Newton had found the only path available in his time to a person of the highest intellectual and creative power.
Charles Darwin admired Isaac Newton
Darwin used Newton's case in his own defence. In February 1860 he read in Brewster's Life of Newton that Leibniz had objected to the law of gravity because Newton could not say what gravity is, and the sixth edition of the Origin (1872) calls that law the greatest discovery ever made by man. In an 1860 letter to Asa Gray he wrote that a dog might as well speculate on the mind of Newton.
Charles Darwin shares a tradition with Marcus Aurelius
In The Descent of Man Darwin wrote that the idea of the moral sense arising from human social nature had occurred long ago to Marcus Aurelius, and quoted the Meditations, in an 1869 English translation, on how habitual thoughts dye the soul.
